How do i get rid of Acne scars?

I had really bad acne as a teenager and the only thing that got rid of it was when I finally went on birth control. I'm only 22 now but I still get breakouts from time to time and I just bought a new OTC acne/scar gel. It's by Neutrogena and it's in an orange box. I don't remember the exact name but its to clear acne and fade acne scars.
