Is there such a thing as total amnesia?

And still be capable of motor function and still speak their native language/first language? I ask this because it is my understanding of biology that brain cells and neurons hold memories and that in order to forget everything that ever happened to you all of your brain cells and neurons would have to die. But wouldn't that mean your brain dead?
