Hello question about highlighting hair at home but am concerned because of pervious colouring HELP PLZ

hi so i want to highlight my hair and i want to get like a carmel colour highlight (but i wont go to a professional) i have originally dark brown hair, almost black and it doesn't take colour very well. but in june i dyed my hair a dark golden blonde colour and it came out brown but more with a reddish hue. if i highlight my hair with a carmel colour will my hair come out like on the box or will it come out a different colour because its been coloured before? thanks.
